In high-school it was ok to follow your friends around like a lost puppy, but this is life. Never make the same choice as your friend unless you’ve really spent the time researching a career choice.

My Mom/Dad is a _____

Do you really want to be in the same profession as your parents? Maybe, but be sure that’s really what you want to do, not something your parents want you to be.

So and So Told Me to Be A ______

Really? You’re 18 now, stop listening to others and make your own choice. Feel free to use this unsolicited advice to help you research a career choice, but only use this as a suggestion.

I Just Picked Something That Sounded Cool

Again, really? Hopefully you did some research, and this is truly something that you have an interest in doing.

I’ll Figure It Out In College

This may be your best alternative if you haven’t a clue as to what you want to be. Attending college is a great opportunity to dive into a number of classes that will help you to choose a career. Hopefully you’ve narrowed it down to something so you can focus on those classes to help validate your choice.

Be Smart

The above examples may be a little extreme, but there is some truth to each of them. When choosing a career, be sure this is something that you truly have an interest in doing. You have to remember, this is your career choice, a choice that will hopefully last you a lifetime.

Choosing the right career takes time, both in doing the research on that career choice as well as well as doing the appropriate soul searching to ensure this is something you want to do. Don’t take the task lightly.
